Geomatics Engineering-Everything about Geomatics in Nepal

Geomatics Engineering is a systemic, multidisciplinary, integrated method for choosing the tools and techniques for gathering, storing, integrating, modelling, analysing, retrieving at will, transforming, displaying, and disseminating spatially geo-referenced data from various sources with clearly defined accuracy characteristics, continuity, and in a digital format. It employs terrestrial, marine, aerial, and satellite-based sensors to gather spatial and other data, all within the geodesy-based scientific framework.

Who is a Geomatics Engineer?

Geomatics engineers are professionals that specialize in geomatics and create, run, and analyze systems for gathering spatial data on the earth’s surface, the oceans, natural resources, and man-made features.

Surveying and mapping, tracking illegal immigration, aerial photography for forest fire remote sensing, mapping legal boundaries on the ground to support land use through laws like zoning laws, and measuring the climate from aircraft after instrumentation is added to sensors on board a moving plane are just a few of the diverse fields where this branch of engineering is used. They might also look into problems with the quality of life, like air and noise pollution.

The Geomatics field involves the surveying of the entire or a portion of the earth using various techniques (satellite positioning, satellite image processing, etc.), and the resulting spatial data is evaluated and expressed in maps and plans in the computer environment. One of the engineering specialities that are most open to technological advancements and has the best uses of modern technology is geomatics engineering.

The creation of various maps and spatial data/information for the needs of the nation (planning, property, defence, etc.) and pinpointing the exact position (horizontal and vertical) of any kind of space or land related to the earth are the goals of geomatics engineering. These techniques are based on modern technology and aim to improve our understanding, planning, organization, monitoring, and management of the earth we live on.

Geomatics Engineering in Nepal

The field of geomatic engineering is expanding quickly (that focuses on spatial information, i.e. information that has a location). The field is developing at the same rate as information technology. Geomatics engineers act as spatial engineers by implementing relational data structures involving measurement sciences and applying engineering principles to spatial information. For the construction of infrastructure, geomatics engineers manage local, regional, and global spatial data.

Geomatics Engineering is a systematic, multidisciplinary, integrated method for choosing the tools and techniques for gathering, storing, integrating, modelling, analyzing, retrieving at will, transforming, displaying, and disseminating spatially geo-referenced data from various sources with clearly defined accuracy characteristics, a sense of continuity, and in a digital format.

Surveying methods for land, cadastral, aerial, mining, and engineering surveys are studied by geomatics engineering students. In order to have a solid basis in this engineering career, geomatics engineers will be prepared with fundamental science and engineering knowledge and abilities.

Scope of Geomatics Engineering in Nepal

Computer science, geodesy, topography, cartography, photogrammetry, remote sensing, GPS, geographic information systems (GIS), WebGIS, decision support systems, and expert systems are the disciplines and methods that make up Geomatics Engineering. That means a Geomatics Engineering graduate possesses a piece of basic knowledge in these fields that make him/her ease in the career to come. Salary of Geomatics Engineer in Nepal

This is the typical monthly wage, which also includes housing, transportation, and other amenities. Depending on factors including region, gender, experience, and skills, geomatics engineer salaries might vary greatly. The minimum monthly wage for a geotechnical engineer in Nepal is 35,800 NPR; the maximum monthly income is 71,000 NPR (maximum salary).

Geomatics Engineering Colleges in Nepal

Geomatics is a new engineering program in our country that started in 2007 AD, there are only a few academic institutions in Nepal that provide this course. Geomatics was first initiated by Kathmandu University in the collaboration with Government of Nepal, however, here is the list of colleges that offer a Bachelor in Geomatics Program for you.

1. Kathmandu University

Kathmandu University’s School of Engineering and the Land Management Training Center (LMTC), Dhulikhel, are collaborating to offer a new four-year undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Geomatics Engineering. With approval from the Ministry of Land Reforms, the Government of Nepal, this program is being administered under the Memorandum of Understanding between the School of Engineering at KU and the Land Management Training Center (LMTC), Dhulikhel. According to this agreement, the Ministry of Land Reform will contribute money to support the program’s operations.

Undergraduate Program

With an agreement to be jointly managed by Kathmandu University and LMTC, the Department of Geomatics Engineering offers a 4-year undergraduate BE degree in Geomatics Engineering. On June 8, 2007, Mr Hridriya Narayan Mishra, the acting executive director of LMTC, and Dr Bhola Thapa, the acting dean of the school of Engineering, signed a memorandum of understanding to begin the program in August 2007.

According to this agreement, the Ministry of Land Reform will contribute money to keep the program running for four batches, or seven years. The main reasons why the majority of students choose KU’s Geomatics Engineering as their next career step are the dissolved set of various faculties with a quest for leadership education and each fashioned in offering up-to-date educational materials.

The main objectives of the program are:

  • To meet the demands of various institutions across the nation, the production of skilled academic personnel in the fields of surveying and mapping, land administration, and geo is necessary.
  • The creation of qualified workers in the geoinformatics, land administration, and surveying and mapping fields that may be sold on the global market.
  • Conducting and promoting research and development initiatives in the geoinformation, land administration, and surveying and mapping fields.
  • Establishing cooperative relationships with international institutions performing comparable functions for the benefit of both parties through student exchange programs and the sharing of information and technology to advance humankind.

Admission Procedure

The candidate must have received at least 50% overall and 50% in PCM in ISC (or 10+2 or a comparable exam).

Application Form:

The application form may be obtained from the Central Office in Dhulikhel (non-refundable). To apply at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre, all applicants must submit an application form together with a non-refundable fee of Rs. 2000.

Admission Test [CBT]

The candidates will take a two-hour entrance examination called KU-CBT to gauge their knowledge of ISC. level physics, chemistry and mathematics.
