Chemical Engineering in Nepal-Scope, Fee, Colleges

Chemical Engineering in Nepal is a branch of Engineering that deals with the development, production and utilization of chemicals and related technologies. The discipline can be divided into four major branches. Chemical engineers specialize in one or more of these fields and study chemical trends, identify the most efficient ways of manufacturing a product or process, apply operation and design principles that optimize the performance of a process, and then translate their findings into blueprints for practical implementation.

There are a number of sectors in which we might familiarize ourselves with the current state of scientific advancement. Due to man’s intrinsic ability to create new things and repair broken ones, engineering is one of the most sought-after employment sectors. The application of math and science in the engineering area results in advancements in technology’s design, functioning, and other facets. There are numerous engineering specialities. Engineering fields that fall under this category include mechanical, electrical, computer, chemical, and many others. Chemical engineering is the area of engineering that focuses on the design, operation, and strategies for increasing the output of chemical plants. Chemical engineers are therefore creating profitable commercial procedures to transform raw materials into usable goods.

Actually, the methods for creating, converting, and conveying materials can be thought of and designed by chemical engineers. They are starting with laboratory testing and moving on to putting the technology into full-scale production after that. Chemical engineers are in high demand in the contemporary era of industrialization. This is because many different sectors rely on the creation and processing of chemicals and materials.

Chemical engineers are benefiting from expanding prospects in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and environmental engineering thanks to sectors like the chemical, energy, and oil industries. In domains where processes require the chemical or physical transformation of materials, the chemical engineer’s specialized training is particularly important.

Without a question, chemical engineers strive to make people’s lives better. Chemical engineers are needed to make many of the things we use every day. Chemical engineers also contribute to the eradication of hunger, sickness, and poverty.

Chemical Engineering in Nepal

Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the manufacture of chemicals and the creation of products via the use of chemicals. This entails creating tools, processes, and methods for processing chemicals, mixing, compounding, and processing raw ingredients to produce usable products.

Chemical engineers use chemical reactions in many of their operations, and they take their cues from chemists who are investigating the fundamentals of chemical reactions and looking for new ways to produce commodities. Chemical engineers then utilize this information to develop designs. This leads to two primary subgroups that offer a more comprehensive response to the query, “What is Chemical Engineering?” Specifically:

  • Design, production, and use of large-scale industrial chemical, biological, or related processes’ apparatus and equipment
  • The development of new or modified chemicals for a range of products

Chemical engineers are crucial in modern society. They are in charge of a wide range of tasks that directly affect how businesses run every day, as well as the overall layout of facilities, machinery, and procedures. Process and product engineering are the sole focus of chemical engineers. All production processes are run and optimized by them, and they also come up with new ideas and designs for items that adhere to strict guidelines for environmentally friendly and sustainable practices.

Chemical engineers are in high demand in the pharmaceutical, cement, steel, paper, food, and beverage industries; nevertheless, most of these sectors hire them from outside. Additionally, both large and small enterprises are currently operating in the nation, and numerous mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers work in a wide range of industries. Chemical engineering education has not yet been offered at any academic institution in Nepal.

The Nepali government is actively working to expand the number of industrial regions across the nation in order to strengthen Nepal’s economy and production capacity. Nepal will soon move towards more effective and intensive industrialisation with such policies expanding the spectrum of output, and this, in particular, calls for highly qualified chemical engineers. As a result, the proposed chemical engineering program is unique in Nepal and seeks to generate highly trained graduates to meet the demand of the nation.

Scope of Chemical Engineering in Nepal

The application of chemical engineering is more important than ever given the problems with pollution and global warming. Chemical engineers who can develop new environmentally friendly materials are needed by both society and the world to lessen the effects of human activity on the environment. Additionally, there is constant competition in the race to advance technological advancements and living standards. Chemical engineers can always help with these.

Chemical industries use a variety of chemical engineers. The development of new polymeric materials with significant electrical, optical, or mechanical properties is being studied there. It requires consideration of the flow and forming processes in addition to the polymer synthesis. These procedures are required to produce a finished product.

Consequently, a chemical engineer needs to comprehend both engineering and scientific ideas thoroughly and quantitatively. In order to address this, the curriculum is being designed to cover the study of applied mathematics, material, and energy. Additionally, it strikes a balance between other engineering disciplines and the fields of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy and mass transfer, chemical reaction kinetics, reactor design, etc. A strong basis in the sciences of chemistry, physics, and biology is thus provided by chemical engineering.

Here are the only two universities offering chemical engineering in Nepal until 2022 AD:

1. Kathmandu University-School of Engineering

Chemical science and engineering bachelor’s degrees are offered at Kathmandu University. The faculty at Kathmandu University is highly qualified in all fields, including science and engineering. As a result, Kathmandu University has been able to launch its undergraduate chemical engineering program using the available personnel resources. Currently, there are 30 seats for this program at KU, and more laboratories and instructors are being added to the program to strengthen it.

Eligibility

The candidate must have finished Intermediate in Science, Class XII in Science, or an equivalent course in science with an average of at least 50% in physics, chemistry, and maths in order to be eligible to apply. A computer-based test is used to assess the applicant’s performance in the prerequisite subjects of physics, chemistry, and mathematics (CBT).

The list of students who are qualified for admission is then released on the university websites after the shortlisted candidates from the written test are invited for interviews to gauge their ability.

Internship

Kathmandu University and Udayapur Cement Industries Limited have previously signed an MOU. In these companies, students will have a fantastic opportunity to complete an internship and gain practical experience in chemical engineering professions.
